Fota Arboretum & Gardens
Fota Arboretum & Gardens
The magnificent walks through the arboretum and gardens at Fota is a most enjoyable experience for all who visit this unique island. 'Fota" is derived from the Irish word "Fód te" which means warm soil. Due to this micro climate, the cultivation of tender and exotic plants was possible which might not otherwise be grown in other parts of Ireland. Many of the tree and plant specimens were introduced from Asia, Australia and the Americas during the 19th century. By the early 19th century, James Hugh Smith-Barry had already started on the layout of the gardens at Fota, building the terraces and high walls. He then converted the fields, native woodlands and swamp into the amazing Arboretum, water, gardens and semi-tropical jungle that we have today.
The seasonal displays of colour throughout the Arboretum make a visit at any time of year a memorable experience
