Attractions
East Cork has a tremendous selection of visitor attractions for one small region– in fact there is something for everyone on a rainy or a sunny day!
You can visit Fota Island and its world famous Wildlife Park, where you can come face to face with over 90 species of wildlife, from giraffes and zebras to ring-tailed lemurs and cheetahs! Also, beautifully positioned in this parkland setting, is Fota House and Gardens. The house is a splendid example of regency architecture where detailed stories of Fota are presented on touch screens throughout the building.
The Queenstown Story in Cobh hosts a dramatic multi media exhibition of the origins, history and legacy of Cobh. While visiting this quaint town, a walking tour on the Titanic Trail is a must – not forgetting the magnificent Gothic Revival Cathedral, St. Colman's, with its unique 49-bell Carillon, Cobh Museum or The Sirius Art Centre.
Adjacent to Cobh and Midleton, is Barryscourt Castle. The recently refurbished 15th Century Tower House, provides fascinating insights to the past. Nearby, your visit to the Old Midleton Distillery will take you right to the heart of the whiskey making tradition. This beautifully restored industrial complex is truly amazing.
For a day out with the family, there is Trabolgan Holiday Village with a fantastic array of activities for young and old. Perks Family Centre in Youghal is sure to keep the whole family entertained for hours. If you would like a trip down memory lane and the experience of rural life in Ireland, don’t miss Leahy's Open Farm!
Other visitor attractions in the area include Fox’s Lane Museum and the Youghal Heritage Centre, where you can avail of a Guided Walking Tour of the old town. Of particular note will be a visit to St.Mary’s Collegiate Church in Youghal, one of the oldest parish churches in Ireland. The church dates from 1220 and features a nave roof of Irish oak – 900 years old.
The scenic attractions, such as the superb vistas from Cobh, speak for themselves – as does the pastoral countryside and beautiful gardens that are open to the public.
As we say in East Cork, there is a feast in the East of things to do!
Other Visitor Attractions within one hours drive of East Cork include Blarney Castle, home to the famous Blarney Stone and guaranteed to give you ‘the gift of the gab’! Charles Fort in Kinsale, another worthwhile excursion, is a classic example of a star shaped fort, built in the 17th century. On a visit to Cork City you can go to see the Cork City Gaol, an exciting visitor attraction, with an audio visual presentation on prisoner life; or visit the Cork Vision Centre, where you can explore Cork’s past and its evolution to the present day.
