The RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German U-Boat off the Old Head of Kinsale on
May 7, 1915. The survivors were brought to Cobh, and over one hundred victims lie buried in the
Cemetery about a mile north of the town. Cobh Tourism commemorates the tragedy of the sinking of the
Lusitania each year. Each year a prayer and wreath laying ceremony takes place in the Old Church Cemetery. The proceedings then move to the Lusitania Peace Memorial in Casement square where prayers and hymns are followed by a wreath laying ceremony.
